DAVE PAYNE: Bristol's got talent, you only have to look at my old mate Terry Cole to prove it
OVER the years I have been involved in one way or another with many football clubs.
On every occasion, I have met different people who I have befriended for that period of time, while at that club. Some remain good friends, but others, just by varying circumstances, seem to drift away and I very rarely have any contact with them on leaving that particular club.

One such person who I was very close to, but has not been involved in local soccer for years, was Terry Cole, who featured in this column on a regular basis. We were together at Welton Rovers, where he helped me run the first team.
We never enjoyed the best of times on the pitch there; in fact, Terry helped me in nearly getting them relegated. Away from the playing side of things though, we did have some fun. To be honest we usually ended up exchanging barbed remarks, which I always find amusing.

Terry was always into his singing, and I can recall at the time telling him that he had the voice of an angel. He seemed genuinely touched by this comment until I added: "Yes, a hell's angel."
In all honesty, he hasn't got a bad voice, and his ambition was always to appear on the Britain's Got Talent show to belt out a tune... I can just see Terry winning that, then appearing with others who have been successful on the show – notably Paul Potts and Susan Boyle.
That would make a great trio; admittedly Terry would struggle at first, but I'm sure that he would soon accept that he may not have the good looks of the other two, but with practice could one day match their vocal range.
The reason I mention Terry, is that he was spotted by a good pal of mine – Lee Scadding, strutting his stuff last Saturday night in a pub at Knowle. Scads called me the next morning in fits of laughter, explaining Terry's performance. Through stifled giggles he told me that the pub had advertised the night as a tapas experience with Spanish music playing throughout the evening.
Terry apparently was the Spanish singer. With his large frame and ginger locks, Terry doesn't typify the stereotype version of a Spanish performer, although I can see a passing resemblance to the Barcelona defender, Carles Puyol. My local pub is having an Italian-themed evening this weekend, I am wondering if Terry is booked to perform as Pavarotti!
I was watching our reserve team play recently, where I experienced a surreal moment. Four young men came and stood beside me, when the one who appeared to be the eldest held out his hand and introduced himself and his three brothers. He started, "My name is Patrick, I am named after the patron saint of Ireland. This is my younger brother George, named after the patron saint of England. The smaller chap over here is named Andrew, born on the day Scotland celebrate their national day."
Before he could continue, I said "Don't tell me your youngest brother's name is David, the same as mine, who just happens to be the patron saint of Wales?"
Dead pan he looked at me and said, "No actually, his name is Pancake!"
