“@Michelle, electrically assisted pedal bikes legally limited to about 17mph. Anything faster and it is classed as a motor bike, and has to have brake lights, covered brakes, wing mirrors etc.
@Paul, seriously injured means a broken bone, or hospitalised (not just A&E).
@Hannah, I have lights on my bike, I wear hi-vis etc, yet motorists still claim not to be able to see me, or cut me up. Also a helmet would not make any difference in a collision like this one.”

“Michelle - Cars are high performance vehicles compared to bicycles. When was the last time you saw a bike on the motorway (keeping up with traffic) thats why they have indicators and lights as standard.
Perhaps cars should understand that when I stop in front of you at lights in the advanced stopping lane I'm not doing it coz I want to race you nor am I trying to delay your journey please therefore, don't fly up behind me. Same applies if I filter past you - it doesn't mean that when you catch up with me I want you to drive really close to me or cut in front of me.
I'd quite happily fit brake lights and indicators to my bicycle if the law required me too.
If there is a red light then ikes should stop if traffic is slowing and they can filter through than that is how the road works! Motorbikes do the same - in fact isn't it encouraged as part of motorbike test(not 100% on this as don't have a motorbike licence)?”

“Why the hell are we even comparing the fatal danger posed by bicycles and cars?

“Hans Klapp - where in my post do I mention cycling at night?
I'm acutely aware of the fact that cars have headlights. I'm also aware that if its dark and I wear black then people proabbly won't see me. It's frustrating though when people expect cyclists to dress like a neon fairy 24/7.”
