Headteacher Paul Sainsbury gave Bradley Stoke a batting lesson as he scored 135 not out for Long Ashton in their Bristol & District Division One victory.

The 35-year-old, headteacher at Tickenham Primary School, got top marks as he posted the first league century of his 21-year Long Ashton career to win the Evening Post cricketer of the week award.

Sainsbury helped his side to 220-8 from their 45 overs before they limited Bradley Stoke to 165-8 to claim a 55-run victory.

"It was very enjoyable and it's been a long time coming," said Sainsbury. "I made my first-team debut in 1988, when I was 14, and this is the first time I have a scored a league century. It's nice to finally break that duck."

Sainsbury scored four sixes as he held his side's innings together, with John-Lee Sullivan (33) the only other Long Ashton player to reach double figures. They put on 82 in a crucial fifth-wicket partnership.

Victory for Long Ashton was perhaps harsh on Bradley Stoke all-rounder Bhushan Mankar, who took 7-46 and then hit 61 runs, including one six that flew over the boundary and hit Sainsbury's four-year-old son Shay.

"My son, who is four, was watching on the boundary and got hit by one of their guy's sixes," said Sainsbury. "He's got a bit of a bruise on his arm but he's okay!"
