Cricketer of the week: Purnell the star for the Toucans
Mike Purnell, of Clevedon Toucans, has won this week's Evening Post Cricketer of the Week award after an impressive display of seam bowling.
Purnell took 8-24 as the Toucans coasted to a 208-run victory over Saltford Fairway, at Esmond Grove, in Division One of the North Somerset Sunday Conference.
Clevedon won the toss and batted first, with number four batsman Jon Sampson the stand-out performer with 73.
Needing 272 to win, Saltford got off to the worst possible start as Purnell began his destructive spell by taking a wicket with the first ball of the innings.
Clevedon skipper Jonathon Shepherd praised Purnell's approach.
He said: "He just bowled a good line and length, pitching the ball up and it was swinging. He was taking a wicket almost every over."
Unfortunately for the Toucans, Purnell's talents extend beyond the cricket field.
"He's just started playing football for Clevedon United," Shepherd added, "so he's a very good sportsman."
The captain will no doubt be hoping that, on this form, his star bowler will not be a regular absentee.
