Weston-super-Mare's budgetary restrictions may finally be catching up with Craig Laird's team.

Although the Seagulls are once again in and around the play-off places this season, they are clearly punching above their weight in a division brim-full of bigger spending rivals.

And the strain of trying to keep pace with the Blue Square South front-runners now that injury and illness are taking a toll on arguably the smallest squad in the league is beginning to show.

Held to a 1-1 draw by Maidenhead last Saturday, Weston then suffered a 4-2 home defeat at the hands of Eastleigh. And the flu bug that has gone through the camp in recent weeks looks as though it will again restrict Laird's options at Eastbourne tomorrow.

Matt Villis and Brett Trowbridge missed out in midweek and remain doubts for the trip to Sussex, while Laird's attempts to bolster a squad that lacks strength in depth were dealt a blow when defender Tom Jordan turned down Weston to join Sutton instead.

Laird revealed: "We were unable to meet Tom's expectations financially and lost him to Sutton, which is frustrating.

"Ideally, you need to operate with a squad of 20 players and those coming into the side when there are injuries or suspensions should be as good as those who are missing.

"Unfortunately, we work with just 16 paid players and the depth simply is not there. When Woking were bringing in experienced players with Football League experience to help them win promotion at this stage last season, we were calling up under-18s to plug the gaps in our squad.

"It is difficult to keep players fresh when you work with such a small squad and I think it is catching up with us now. It shows just how well we have done to be where we are."
