Someone had left them on the bonnet of Mr Gundry's Skoda, which the couple had parked at 11pm the night before.
The retired couple have no pets of their own or any connection to animals so were shocked when they opened the box to find the five tabby kittens.

Mrs Gundry, 70, said: "We were so shocked to find them.
"We don't know why anyone would leave them on our car – they were mewing and seemed hungry. We were concerned they might die."
The couple called an animal rescue shelter in Wotton-under-Edge, which had been recommended to them by a friend.
They delivered the kittens to Wotton Animal Rescue Centre, run by Veronica Bruce.
The centre is inundated with cats and kittens but Ms Bruce agreed to take them due to their age.
"We, like many other sanctuaries, are full to the brim with cats and kittens – it's a real problem," she said. Anyone who thinks they can give a home to a cat or kitten should contact Ms Bruce on 01453 842884.
