A COUPLE are celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary today ahead of a planned trip to Weymouth, the venue for their honeymoon 60 years ago.

Celebrations for Eva and Andrew 'Jimmy' Elder kicked off last weekend with a big party in Stoke Gifford.

Pipers played for Scottish Jimmy's entrance while snapping cameras and a crowd of well-wishers made Eva "feel like a queen".

Eva told the Post: "The cameras were going and there were two seats there waiting for us as we got out of our wedding car. It was brilliant and I felt like the queen."

Finding time to look back to their wedding day, Eva, 83, and Jimmy, 84, recalled a memorable September's day.

The marriage took place in Winterbourne, where Eva had grown up, with a trip to the seaside in Weymouth beckoning for the newlyweds.

Spending the following days by the sea was an experience that would stay with them forever and one that they will relive with their family this coming weekend.

Eva was born and bred in Winterbourne and to this day lives in the same house that she grew up in. Husband Jimmy comes from just across the Scottish border in Kelso. He was travelling while working for Standard Telephone and Cable when they met in 1950, while Eva was working in nearby Carsons chocolate factory in Mangotsfield.

Two years later they were married and settled down to raise a family. They had four children, Marlene, Angela, Judith and Robert with eight grandchildren in total – one girl and one boy from each child. They now have three great grandchildren.

Eva said the secret to a successful marriage was good balance. She thanked her family and friends for their gifts and kindness at the party last weekend.
