A couple who went to the aid of a Bristol woman they thought was in distress were attacked themselves.

The couple were in Avon Street, St Philip's, on Sunday at 3.30am when they saw the woman with two men.

When they approached to see if they could help the woman, the trio turned on the 34-year-old man.

He was punched and kicked and suffered a broken jaw.

The 31-year-old woman with him was also punched in the face and suffered cuts and bruises.

The two men and the woman then made off and it is thought they may have got into a taxi.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Bristol CID on 0845 456 7000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
