Councillors fail to tackle dangers

The Post

WHEN I walk to work along Wells Road towards Whitchurch I shudder when crossing the busy four-way West Town Lane junction by The Happy Landings. There's no safe pedestrian crossing place. Even crossing by watching the lights directing traffic is hard because of the angles they're positioned in.

I'm not alone: students from St Bernadette and Oasis Academy struggle too. So two months ago, when roadworks were being carried out there I assumed the opportunity to make it safe for pedestrians would be taken. But it wasn't. Still there's no crossing. Every day, along with scores of other pedestrians, I continue to take my life in my hands.

The slopes and blind corners surely make this junction one of Bristol's most menacing for pedestrians.

Before Christmas I wrote to some councillors: a Cabinet decision-maker and my two ward representatives, all Liberal Democrats, pointing out the perils and asking for solutions.

The Cabinet member emailed to me saying he would do his "best to get some answers" for me as soon as possible. He forwarded it to a different Lib Dem Cabinet member who himself emailed me saying he'd "double check" the situation.

Over six weeks on, these councillors are either still scrabbling around for "answers", or still "double-checking", or else they've given up on those of us who cross at this treacherous place. I haven't heard a thing from them. Not a sausage.

A separate, functional reply from a council officer to whom I also wrote said measures necessary to make this junction safe for pedestrians would 'cost a considerable amount'. So they probably aren't planning to do anything.

Action to solve the perils would require money, of course. But the promised explanations from these councillors would have cost them nothing.

Next time Lib Dems post their vote-seeking propaganda through your door, look for the gap between what they say and what they actually do. It's always been the best way to judge politicians.

“Mr Wyatt, I'm sure they will get round to putting some crossings in place...all we need is for a small child to get crushed under the wheels of a bus first.

////being facetious of course, but sadly I'm serious////”
