A CRACKDOWN on dangerous, illegal and inconsiderate parking is due to begin this month, costing more than £36,000.

Bristol City Council's mobile enforcement van will be using a camera to monitor parking outside schools, hospitals and bus stops.

The Fiesta van, which has city council markings, is fitted with a camera that uses automated number plate recognition (ANPR).

It will enforce parking contraventions at schools, keep clear zigzag markings, bus stops, pedestrian crossing zigzags, taxi ranks, hospital emergency spaces and where a loading restriction is in place.

The van will operate from 7am to 10pm Monday to Saturday, and 9am to 5pm on Sunday. It will be places such as schools during weekday drop-off and collection times.

The council says a three-day trial last February led to better behaviour, particularly outside schools.

Councillor Tim Kent, pictured, executive member for transport, said: "The aim it to get everyone parking safely and legally at problem locations. At schools and hospitals, bus stops and loading bays it is vital people do not park in a dangerous manner."

The penalty for parking illegally is £70 discounted to £35 if paid within 21 days. There will be a two week warning period before enforcement begins.

“Classic example. Due to a car and a white can parking poorly, there wasn't enough room for me to turn onto the side street that leads to my son's school. I'm more than happy to grass those drivers in to the council.

Mind you, how many people here actually remember the rules governing parking in the Highway Code? Without looking for it on Google?”

“Sorry to disappoint you Charlespk but none of the places you mentioned would be appropriate due to their climates. You are right of course, I didn't shed too many tears, if any at all, when Kim Jong-il died although I am a little concerned at the position his son will take especially as North Korea is a nuclear power and I do not wish to become embroiled in a nuclear conflict if he decides to flex his muscles with South Korea.

I have only lived in Bristol for a couple of months back in the early 70s and have always lived, before and after, outside of Bristol. The parking issue affects every urban area in the UK and, unless steps are taken will only become worse.

I was driving buses and coaches around Bristol in the late 70s/early 80s and there were roads that proved almost impossible to drive down due to illegal and inconsiderate car parking even though there were fewer private cars on the road than there are today.

The road I was born in, not in Bristol, had, at best, a dozen car owners in it now there are vehicles double parked along its' whole length even though almost, if not all, the houses have rear access and many have garages - not used for the family car of course.

It would be difficult for a fire engine to get to a property in an emergency without, if the driver was prepared, taking off a few mirrors or shunting vehicles out of the way.

Believe it or not but I do know I am born and do not expect it all on a plate just that I expect people to obey the laws that society has to live by and that includes laws relating to vehicles and vehicle ownership and yes, I include cyclists who flout the law by riding on pavements and failing to observe traffic signals.”

“They used to sell those whole chickens, on a spit in a place near the Hippodrome. . They were hot and delicious. . A few older ones will remember. . Those were the days! . Of course they've banned them just as they did the hot salted peanuts. . Control Freaks everyone of them.

I'm afraid that again there will be a society organised, masterminded, regulated, controlled from above by the 'anointed', by the people who know better than the rest of us what to do. . I'm afraid this is something we went through it in the past.

“Can I suggest you find another town or city to live that better suits your demeanour Stagnate. .
Perhaps Rangoon? . Or how about Saigon? . . Better still P'yŏngyang. . You wouldn't ever be allowed to live in Kaesŏng. . I can't really imagine you in tears when Kim Jong-il died.

I was pushing a pushchair around the city centre in 1970. . You don't know your born. . You expect it all on a plate.”

“Can someone please take that picture of Tim Kent off the article.

That smug look is even more annoying than "clippy" the paper clip (which at least I could turn off).

"I can see you are commuting to Bristol...

Would you like me to help you...

    A) Get to work late!
    B) Listen to what you have to say, then ignore you.
    C) Kill off friends and family with my special dangerous sticky out bus-stops"”

    “@ Charlespk

I'm assuming you haven't tried to push a wheelchair or pushchair down many streets in Bristol and surrounding districts where pavement parking, on both sides of the street, is the normal practise. Both parking on pavements and double parking are illegal. Just as I am assuming that you have never felt aggrieved when someone has parked their vehicle right outside your home so that you, or your visitors are forced to park some distance away.

Before anyone jumps in, I know that there is no right to park outside your own property.

In answer to your question that I would erect stocks on College Green that answer is yes if it were allowed. I would use them as a punishment for anti social behaviour, vandalism and other crimes that are a result of machoism or excess testosterone. It is difficult to maintain a macho position when you have p** running down your leg .....”
