Costly gesture and pointless
THE city-wide introduction of 20 mph speed limits is another example of the council making pointless costly gestures to promote itself.
I believe that the outcome in the two pilot areas, reported in this paper, was that in one area there was no reduction in road incidents and in the other area there was actually an increase.
How then are the council aligning this to a city-wide promotion for road safety? Has anyone given any thought to the cost of providing the additional signs for every street in Bristol? As a non-standard speed limit there will need to be 'repeater' signs ' placed at frequent intervals on every road where there is no traffic calming.
If there is local consensus e.g. in residential areas, then by all means install the lower speed limit – but to apply it to the whole of Bristol without consensus just strikes me as council imposing its costly will for political kudos and nothing more.
