Bristol City legend Scott Murray is excited by Steve Coppell's appointment as manager.

And he said the former Reading boss has all the attributes needed to guide the club to the Premier League.

Murray worked with Coppell for a short time after leaving Ashton Gate to join Championship club Reading in a deal worth £650,000 in July 2003.

Although things turned sour for the winger once Alan Pardew was replaced as manager by Coppell, he said he has the utmost respect for the man who will take over as first-team boss at the end of this season.

"I think Steve Coppell is a brilliant appointment," enthused Murray, who returned to Ashton Gate eight months after leaving.

"I don't think the club could have brought in anyone better and everyone connected with Bristol City who I have spoken to is very happy.

"To be honest, it shows how far the club has come over the last few years. We would never have been linked with someone of Coppell's calibre in the past.

"But that has all changed because of the job Gary Johnson did and City is now seen as a club that is going places.

"I think Steve Lansdown (City chairman) has done brilliantly to attract such a high-profile figure."

Coppell describes himself as "open-minded". Murray agrees and believes City's players will have total respect for the new manager.

He said: "Alan Pardew signed me and Steve Coppell sold me, but I still think very highly of him as a manager and as a man.

"Coppell is a very quiet man, definitely not a ranter and a raver, like some managers. They all have different ways of motivating people and he is nothing like some of the bosses I've played under at City.

"He gets his point over without shouting and I think players respect that. Because of what he achieved as a player with Manchester United and England, he commands total respect in the dressing room.

"Coppell has a great record and, as a player, you know he is someone you can learn from. When he talks, people listen."

"The big thing I noticed is how thorough he is. He watches lots of videos of games and players and goes through everything with a fine-tooth comb."
