CONTROVERSIAL plans that could cut pay for Bristol nurses have come under fire in the House of Commons.

Debates were held yesterday on moves by a consortium of trusts in the South West to set their own pay rates. Critics say it will lead to wages across the region falling behind the rest of the country.

Bristol East MP Kerry McCarthy said ministers "still seem determined to remove the N from NHS" and added that she had received hundreds of letters from staff who were "angry and anxious" since the plans were revealed.

But Kingswood Tory MP Chris Skidmore disagreed, saying it was important to have "flexibility" at a local level.

“This is the same Skidmore, single bachelor aged under 35, who takes £1430 per month off the taxpayer in rent, which is 3 times the amount of housing allowance for any other single male aged 35 claiming HB and still more than the maximum national allowance for a 3 bedroom property. Yes, folks, that's right, part-time MP Chris Skidmore, who spends more of his time fulfilling his multiple book contracts than representing you or I, sponges more, on top of his £65 000 salary, in annual rent than a junior nurse on the bottom salary rung can hope to earn in a year, and still he thinks it's quite humane, normal and justified for her to take a pay cut upon a two-year pay freeze while he lives the good life and scoffs and qua*** on taxpayer-subsidised fare in his little Westminster bubble-world.”
