Steve Scott: Too little, too late for Elton John partiers

I can't quite work out whether the natural reserve I witnessed at Elton John's open-air gig at the County Ground on Saturday night is a Bristol thing or an English thing.

Whichever, it certainly took the crowd quite a bit of time to warm up. It was almost surreal.

For the first hour or so most people just sat politely in their seats, perhaps daring to sway a little bit and mouthing the words to Elton John's back catalogue of hits.

Anyone who did stand up was giving a few disapproving looks and rather self consciously sat down again.

It was only really when darkness fell over Bishopston and he appropriately belted out the brilliant Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me that the crowd started to let itself go.

For the last 30 minutes we were up on our feet, arms in the air and the party had really started.

All too soon it was over though and we were trudging home wanting more. I wonder how many others were thinking 'why didn't we get stuck in a little earlier?' I wonder if Elton John was thinking that too?

So there's a new lot running the council house and all because we gave Labour one hell of a kicking in the elections – in Bristol and everywhere else too.

If I was a Labour councillor I would be pretty hacked off by what's happened.

All that hard work at a local level and because of the way Gordon Brown and his posse have carried themselves in the last few months, they're out on their ears.

On a national level it inevitably means very soon we'll be ushering in a new Prime Minister and consigning new Labour to the political history books. Or will we?

As Gordon Brown is clearly one of the least popular residents at No 10 for some time, shouldn't David Cameron be making more of an impact?

The recent polls were good for him and the Tories but they weren't outstanding, which in the wake of the bad smell following this Government around is quite surprising.

So maybe, just maybe, there is an unlikely way back for GB and his team, especially if the economy picks up.

Asked to give an opinion on a man who's led us into recession is one thing, ask again when he's leading us out of it is another thing altogether.

At least in Bristol we didn't let our anger with the Government open a window of opportunity for the British National Party or any similar extremist bunch of chancers.

We should be proud but having said that, it was not edifying to watch Nick Griffin, the BNP leader, being pelted with eggs as he tried to hold an impromptu press conference outside Westminster last week.

It is one of the great traditions in this country that anyone, anywhere, can air their views, however vile, and even Griffin should be allowed to do that.

Let him talk as much as he likes because that is the best way to ensure he won't win again when he's up for re-election.

“Hard one really. With the seating prices and the ability to just up and move around anywhere, it kinda makes a mockery of the pricing if anyone can go anywhere and dance.

The other thing was the security constantly telling people to sit down.
Everyone up in their seats was a better idea, or blocking off of areas to stop the cheap seats invading the dearer ones to allow more freedom around your area :]”

“Elton John concert - plain and simple - noise pollution. What would Sneyd Park Surgeon make of that?”
