This is Bristol

A huge, four-storey shop will open in the Horsefair in August, creating 500 jobs and possibly revolutionising the way clothes shopping is done in Bristol.

Primark is not everyone's cup of tea, although the nay-sayers tend to have never shopped there.

Admittedly, it can be a frantic experience if the evidence of the other big Primarks across the country is anything to go by.

The stores are characterised by huge volumes of clothing of all styles and, crucially, at very affordable prices.

And even the sniffy brigade, who would normally swear by designer labels, are often converted once they try it out.

For most families worried about the recession, a shop like Primark is a must.

But who would bet against Primark holding on to those customers after the hard times?

It's basic economics. Give people what they want and need at a price they can afford and they will buy.

No one can pretend Primark will appeal to all.

Its stores can become incredibly busy, and with large numbers of people rummaging through the clothes, it can become quite chaotic.

But putting to one side any discussion about fashion, shopping habits and the like, there is one element to this story which will have huge benefits for Bristol.

It is the 500 jobs being created at this new store.

Of course, many of them will not be the highest paid, but at a time like this, for the city to have instant job creation is good news indeed.
