This is Bristol

Alison Moon has just returned to her "home" city of Bristol to take charge of all the nurses who work in our city centre hospitals.

It's a big task, of course, and is currently one of the hottest of political hot potatoes.

No matter, Ms Moon already has some good common sense things to say about the National Health Service and its role today.

For a start it's good to see someone in a high-ranking role taking the view that you should treat NHS spending cash as if it was your own budget and money you were handling.

Good, too, to hear that she believes patients must be the focus.

Living in the city herself means she sees things through the eyes of an ordinary resident, rather than from the perspective of a hospital bureaucracy.

As she says, it makes her an "interested party", particularly when it comes to establishing just who would be looking after her own care should the need arise.

For once, this is a case of self-interest we should all welcome.
