Out of shame and a life of wondering has come a remarkable reunion.

It is a story about two people who, for 50 years, have had nothing in common except the same mother.

It is also story which shows the rest of us how the world has changed in many ways since the 1950s.

Karen Davies lives in Shirehampton and until just a few months ago she thought she was an only child, born into the well-known Bollom family of dry cleaning empire fame.

Meanwhile, in France, Nigel Connah had started to wonder about his natural parents. He knew he had been adopted and brought up by a loving couple in Sheffield but he was inquisitive as to his natural parents.

This is where their lives collided.

It turns out Nigel had been put up for adoption not because his mother could not cope but because she was facing a life of shame since the baby boy was conceived out of marriage.

In those days, and especially with such a prominent family, this situation was deemed unacceptable so she was packed off to Sheffield for six months to have the baby.

Years later, she married and then gave birth to Karen.

What a sad time that must have been for her, knowing she had two children but unable to see one.

When Nigel's inquiries led him to Karen, she was angry.

But this seems to have made way for tremendous love as the pair try to fill in the gaps of the past 50 years.

They will have so many stories to tell and experiences to share.

Their lives will never be the same again but, judging by our picture, it will mean a change for the better.
