Whatever views are held, there is not a right-minded person who would think it okay for a child to be bullied.

That bullying could be physical, mental, by text message, and it could be to do with race, physical appearance ... or sexuality.

There is no doubt that, despite the progress made, it is still not easy being gay. And for homosexual teenagers, life can be very lonely.

It may be well known – or suspected in the cruel world of the playground – that a certain child is gay. To whom does he or she turn if this turns to threats or assault?

This is where EACH step in – Educational Action Challenging Homophobia.

The organisation offers telephone help, training and counselling, and now it has been awarded nearly £400,000 from the National Lottery.

There should be no complaint about any organisation which tries to help youngsters in distress.

But by any standards, this is a massive sum of money.

What is unclear is how the money will be spent. The public announcement seems to indicate groups will be set up and activities offered but there is little to account for where the £391,000 will go.

Yet across the city other equally good causes would be grateful for a fraction of this money.

Recently we have reported on how lack of resources means one in three callers to Childline do not even have their call answered.

It is wrong to say that the cash for EACH is a waste of money but there is a legitimate argument that the many groups who have presumably lost out on Lottery funding should feel hard done-by.

Lottery funding must touch as many people in need as possible and there must be confidence that the allocation of the cash makes sense.

In this case, EACH will undoubtedly be able to enhance its service ... but surely the amount of money received is too much.

“Come on editor - stop flip-flopping and say what you really think! Are you saying that straight children calling Childline are a more worthy cause than gay teenagers needing help? I'm not sure Childline would agree with you. Also, what makes you think that no-one will scrutinise how the money is spent? You think that the Lottery just throw it about like sweeties - have you asked them how they make sure their grants are well spent? You've also reported recently about a teenager who killed himself because he couldn't come to terms with his sexuality and his religious belief, does he not count? It sounds to me like you are saying 'Don't get me wrong, I think gay people should have help, but what about all the more deserving causes, surely we should help them first'. Care to comment any further?”

“As MP Stephen Williams has pointed out in the comments section of the main article, what the BEP has totally ignored is that the grant is for 5 years and covers Bristol, North Somerset, South Gloucester and Bath - around £20,000 per year for each area. That's a small amount of money taken in it's correct context. How convenient that the 'journalist' who wrote the story left that part out. It wouldn't have quite the same impact if the truth was told, would it?”
