This is Bristol

For people in the news business, it's tough to accept but true all the same – headlines don't always tell the complete story.

Ask most Bristolians and they will tell you that the city has had problems in education over the past two years.

Ask those same people about their perceptions of schools in Lawrence Weston and they might presume that those problems are magnified.

This is where the headlines become problematic.

Because while there may be some truth in both those statements, there is a school in Lawrence Weston which is not only one of the best in Bristol, but one of the best in the UK.

Our Lady of the Rosary RC Primary is ranked 21st in the country in The Sunday Times league table for state primaries. It is joined in the top 50 by another Catholic primary, St Mary's in Bradley Stoke.

Congratulations are due to teachers, pupils and governors of both schools.

They are proving that good results are possible in all schools in all areas.

Of course, by the nature of a league table, if there are schools at the top then there are also schools at the bottom.

Many will have a low ranking but not deserve it, for many reasons.

So today, we congratulate Gerald Kloska and his team at Our Lady of the Rosary – but be mindful that to take Bristol to the educational level we all want, everyone with a stake in schools must play their part and support the staffs.
