Obviously, road safety is important and anything which seriously compromises it should be removed.

But can anyone genuinely argue that two relatively small signs put up to raise a smile are making people angry? Of course not.

What we have in Brislington is a wonderful example of dry wit. Someone for no other reason than for a bit of fun has added these to the stop signs.

It takes a second or two to read them. And almost immediately the songs they refer to flow into people's heads.

A harmless bit of whimsy.

So is the city council really claiming that they are distracting enough to cause someone to crash or cause an accident?

If so then every billboard beside every road, every shop sign, every tourist sign, every special event sign and advert should be taken down because that argument would apply equally to them.

Come on, this has got nothing to do with road safety. And nothing to do with the signs being illegal.

This has got everything to do with the city council being the most appalling killjoys.

They are so depressingly out of touch with the real world they probably think that should an accident occur someone may blame the sign and then sue them.

They probably also think that if they leave these signs up then more will follow and soon the city will be swamped with them.

What a shame the bureaucrats at the city council are so lacking in humour. But then again is any one really surprised?
