Praise be! Someone is actually listening at Bristol City Council. In what must be one of the boldest civic decisions in years, the council has agreed to hold a trial switch-off of Bristol traffic lights.

The move follows less than two weeks of the Evening Post waging its Put That Light Out Campaign.

Readers, many of whom find their daily journeys seriously hindered by hold-ups artificially generated by the city's numerous traffic lights, enthusiastically backed our campaign.

But without a green light for the experiment from within the city council, nothing could happen.

So the actions of transport supremo Councillor Jon Rogers and city development director David Bishop are to be applauded.

Together they have agreed to initiate a trial in various parts of Bristol.

We believe that switching off really will get things moving on city roads.

The experiment can't start soon enough, so far as we're concerned.
