Comeback win for Bitton against Keynsham
Junior star match: Bitton AFC 4 Keynsham Town Juniors 3
Bitton Under-12s roared back from the brink of defeat to take all three points off local rivals Keynsham in an exciting Division I game.
The visitors, playing downhill, put on a solid first-half performance and led 2-0 at half-time thanks to goals from Harry Neil and Callum Fry.
But Bitton, with the slope in their favour, got one back early in the second half courtesy of Jake Leat before Fry struck again to re-establish Keynsham's two-goal lead.
The hosts then proceeded to score three times without reply to win the match as Louis Rostron, George Watts and a late Leat goal secured a dramatic win.
Keynsham started well and had early chances, the best of which fell to Fry. A misplaced defensive header let him in behind the Bitton defence but he could only shoot straight at keeper Olliver Nicholas.
The visitors maintained their good start and were rewarded with the opening goal in the ninth minute. Kieran Thomas delivered a corner from the left which Bitton's defence failed to deal with and Neil poked the ball over the line from a yard out.
Keynsham continued to dominate and Sam Jarman, Thomas and Jamie Gregory all enjoyed stand-out games.
Bitton also had opportunities. George Watts sent Adam Campbell down the right and his cross found Billy Arnold free in the middle, but he mishit his shot straight at Town keeper Rory Coles.
Coles' boot downfield was deftly flicked on by Neil to release Jarman. The intelligent midfielder let fly from inside the area but his effort struck the post and bounced clear.
The woodwork again came to Bitton's rescue when the ball was hooked into their box, where a defender misjudged it, leaving Neil free. The striker took his shot early but his effort thumped against the angle of bar and post.
From the rebound a mix-up between keeper and defender saw the ball fall to Neil again, this time three yards out, but the Keynsham player struck a post for a second time, the ball bouncing along the goalline before being hacked clear by a grateful defender.
Moments later, Keynsham did double their lead. A ball over the top of the defence from Sam Black was chased down by Fry, who beat his marker before slotting it under the keeper from eight yards.
Despite the scoreline, Bitton remained positive and pulled a goal back early in the second half. Keynsham's defence failed to clear their lines effectively and the ball fell to Leat, whose strike was just too strong for Coles to keep out.
Ten minutes later, Keynsham restored their two-goal advantage. A long ball over the defence from Gregory enabled Fry to go clear and he coolly slotted it past the stranded keeper.
A cracking save from Nicholas denied Neil a potentially decisive fourth goal for Keynsham. As Neil sped into the penalty area, the keeper rushed off his line and spread himself at the feet of the striker.
Midway through the second half, good play by Bitton's Xavier Tilling resulted in him releasing a thunderous strike which was brilliantly saved by Coles.
But the Keynsham keeper could only palm the effort upwards and Rostron was there to net from close range to reduce the arrears to 3-2.
A few minutes later it was 3-3. Another great run from Tilling, dodging tackles and turning players, took him to the byline where he cut the ball back for the waiting George Watts to finish off the move from three yards.
Just after Arnold had made a fantastic goal-saving tackle at one end for Bitton, his team went up the other end and pinched a late and decisive goal.
Fantastic football on the edge of the box led to Watts poking the ball in behind the Town rearguard for Leat to smash home his second of the match to win the game.
