Colleges merge to 'weather turbulent environment'
A NEW era for further education in north Bristol and southern Gloucestershire began this week with the launch of the South Gloucestershire and Stroud College.
The new institution has been formed following a merger of Filton College and Stroud College.

Kevin Hamblin, pictured, who was principal of Filton, has become principal and chief executive of the new college.
Beri Hare, who was principal of Stroud and was recently appointed an OBE, has retired.
Mr Hamblin has been at Filton for more than ten years and has seen student numbers double.
He said: "The merger between Filton and Stroud Colleges is central to realising our shared ambition to extend and protect our provision for learners, employers and local stakeholders – to meet the challenges of the economic development of individuals and the social regeneration of our connecting communities. Filton and Stroud colleges were extremely successful independently, but as a merged institution we can secure a sustainable future that can weather the turbulence of the national environment over the coming years.
"South Gloucestershire and Stroud College has the ability to meet the needs of all our learners and employers through the pooling of our resources, expertise and aspirations. The merger is the union of two like-minded organisations: compatible cultures, harmonised vision, and equally high standards of learner success."
The founding board of governors of South Gloucestershire and Stroud College consists of four governors from the previous boards of Filton and Stroud Colleges respectively and is chaired by John Huggett, the former Filton College chairman.
Mr Huggett said: "We are committed to providing the best possible environment for all learners and to build on the complementary strengths of both Filton and Stroud Colleges. This merger will maintain our treasured local cultures, identities and relationships with the local community."

“Filton ought to concentrate on delivering the courses they already have, well. That means tutors in the lessons they should be in, when they say they will.”

“Hi Lolly60,
It means the college can offer far more courses across the region between the two sites and around South Glos. Scout Enterprises was a franchise partner for Stroud College in Bishopston for many years delivering IT courses and also based near Thornbury delivering outdoor activities in a beautiful converted quarry site. Later SE changed to Filton College as their franchise partner with LEA changes and this could have started the relationship between Stroud and Filton Colleges which has resulted many years later with this merger.
Tutors will be making lots of trips to satellite sites in the region to deliver courses for local people and sometimes specialist courses will mean people driving to Stroud. People have attended Stroud College for Teacher training courses for many years. It's a great move!”
