Clifton close on the title – Old Pats have to battle
Clifton took another step toward clinching the South West One title by overcoming Chippenham 40-3.
Chippenham opened the scoring in the 20th minute with their only score of the match when centre Grant Trewartha slotted a penalty.
Clifton skipper Dan Frost went over to take them in 5-3 up at half time.
Chippenham were under pressure after the break with the wind and slope against them. Former England wing, David Rees cruised in after being put into a gap by centre David Butlers pin-point pass. Fly half John Barnes converted.
The floodgates opened in the final quarter. First wing Andy Bell cantered in for a try. Barnes slotted the extras and added three further conversions. Straight from the kick off number eight John Levis touched down followed by centre Steve Leonard before Bell collected his second try of the day.
Old Patesians had to work hard to scrape a 29-24 away win against Oxford Harlequins .
Duncan Kelly poached a Quins line-out and prop James King was driven over for the opening try. But Quins drew level when Huw Jones danced through soft tackles for a try.
Pats' response was a try from the restart from winger Paddy Dean.
But Ollie Campbell scored a try converted by fly-half Mark North to put Quins ahead.
Pats centre Ben Davies battered a hole through the midfield and fly-half Adam Seager was in close support for a try near the posts which he then converted.
Pats turned the screw with a barnstorming 60-metre charge from number eight Brett Harvey, finished off by a second try for Paddy Dean converted by Seager.
Quins' centre Nick Sevier collected turnover ball and strode majestically through huge gaps in the Pats defence for a good try after the break.
Pats somehow weathered the storm from both the elements and the explosive thrusts from Quins and then introduced replacement scrum-half Rich Stevens.
His impact was almost immediate with a searing break, blindside from a set scrum and a try in the right-hand corner.
Quins refused to capitulate and in the closing minutes Jones picked up his second try after a charge, with North adding the conversion.
