A Bristol city councillor has jumped 12,000ft from a plane for charity.

Clifton East councillor Mike Popham did his first skydive for the Swan Project, based in Ashley Down.

Mr Popham, who has parachuted before, was one of 14 people taking part in the stunt.

The others all work for the project, which helps people break their dependency on alcohol.

Robin Aaranson, who's wife, Ronnie, is the Swan Project's manager, contacted Mr Popham to see if he could help the charity.

Mr Popham, a Liberal Democrat councillor, raised about £300 of the £3,000-plus the jump made in total.

The group made the leap on Sunday, from a small plane above South Cerney aerodrome in Wiltshire.

"I was in the air free-falling for about 40 seconds before the parachute opened at about 5,000 feet," said Mr Popham.

"It felt absolutely wonderful, very exciting. I made a soft landing and everything was very well supervised."
