A Clevedon man in his 30s was rescued by firefighters through his kitchen window after he became trapped in a blaze in his house.

Four firefighters entered his house in Teignmouth Road, just before 2am yesterday.

Crews managed to locate the man and evacuated him through the kitchen window and down a ladder to safety.

Firefighters used a hose reel to extinguish the blaze, which was contained to the kitchen. Smoke spread through the loft space to adjourning properties, including the home of a woman in her 80s, who was taken to hospital for a check-up.

Avon Fire and Rescue Service said that half of all house fires start in the kitchen.
