Clevedon Town draw an eventful opening clash
Clevedon Town 1 Didcot Town 1: Clevedon opened the new league campaign against promoted Didcot and had to settle for a draw in a game which saw six bookings and two red cards.
Didcot had the first significant chance in the 17th minute when, following a corner from Paul Powell, Ian Sampson had his shot well saved by home keeper Danny Greaves. The ball fell to Andy Williams, but his effort was cleared off the line.
The visitors were then awarded a penalty after Dale Peckham was adjudged to have fouled Matty Jack, and Liam Hope beat Greaves with his spot-kick.
Sampson went close to adding a second goal, while at the other end Didcot keeper Mike Watkins made a fine save to keep out a close-range shot from Pete Sheppard.
Clevedon's equaliser came on the stroke of half-time. Matt Walsh crossed from the left for Tom Billing to shoot home at the far post.
In the 56th minute, the visitors had strong appeals for another penalty turned down when Mark Draycott went down in the box, and the same player later sent a shot inches wide of a post.
Both sides were reduced to 10 men in the 85th minute, when Clevedon's Craig Loxton and Didcot substitute Morgan Williams were shown straight red cards, and Draycott again went close for the visitors in the last minute.
