Cleve climb out of bottom three with Coney Hill success
CLEVE climbed out of the South West One bottom three for the first time this season after hanging on for a 21-18 victory against Coney Hill.
But the win did come with a cost after the Mangotsfield-based outfit lost wing Shack Ajuwa with a dislocated ankle.
Cleve were 21-6 up after 60 minutes thanks to tries from Nathan Huntley and Tom O'Leary plus three penalties and a conversion from Joe Hall.
But, despite losing flanker Guy Mercer and prop Alan Low to the sin bin, they claimed their second straight victory.
Weston-super-Mare conceded two late tries to lose 27-20 at bottom club Oxford Harlequins.
Tries from Chris Crichton (2) and Dan Fry plus a conversion and penalty from debutant Daryl Sanft handed the Seasiders a 20-15 lead with 12 minutes left.
In South West Two West, Avonmouth lost 27-8 in their top of the table clash at home to Taunton and now trail the leaders by four points.
Charlie Reynolds kicked 'Mouth 3-0 up with a penalty after two minutes but, after that, it was virtually one way traffic before Reynolds scored a breakaway try at the death.
The hosts also had Craig Britton yellow carded and have injury worries over Luke Matthews (ankle) and Matt Lawrence (knee).
Bottom club Clevedon, yet to win this season, lost 17-10 at home to Brixham.
They were 17-0 down before Steve Johnson kicked a penalty just before the break. Chris Page scored a pushover try, Johnson converting, as the Somerset side won the second half 7-0.
Fellow strugglers Yatton and St Mary's suffered heavy defeats at Devon sides Newton Abbot (46-3) and Torquay Athletic (62-5) respectively.
Tony Hill kicked Yatton's solitary penalty while James Gallagher crossed for Saints' only try. Mary's have also been deducted two points for playing an unregistered player.
