Cleevely rues the one that got away
When Pete Powe and Brian Cleevely called "fish on" at the final whistle – both knew they had hooked into a winning fish.
However, within 30 second of shouting, Cleevely had lost his fish and Powe scraped home to win the Kingswood Disabled & Over 55s match fished at Westerleigh Lake – by 6oz.
Powe poled both pellet and paste at 10 metres centre off peg 10 for 28-14-0 of carp to 6lb, while Cleevely targeted the bigger fish with prawns at peg 19 and weighed-in a similar 28-8-0.
The third heaviest weight fell to John Scrase, who fished pellet and maggot at peg12 for skimmers, tench, and carp to 4lb.
Result: 1, Pete Powe 28-14-0, peg 10; 2, Brian Cleevely 28-8-0, peg 19; 3, John Scrase 26-8-0, peg 12; 4, Dave Britton 22-1-0; 5, Bernice Britton 22-0-0, peg 29; 6 = Dave Blakemore (peg 14) and Tom Bailey (peg 6), both 17-14-0.
Mike West finished more than 50-0-0 clear of the field in the Avon Angling Bank Holiday Monday Open Match fished at Landsend Fisheries, Wedmore.
He poled paste strait down the track at Specimen 31 and beat 28 of the West Country's top anglers with a 15-carp catch totalling 182-2-0.
The nearest challenger was local rod Jamie Dyte, who fished the same bait as the winner on to the island ledge at 14 metres off Specimen 33 and weighed-in a similar 131-8-0.
Third best was Tony Rixon with 119-4-0, taken with a 6mm banded pellet poled at 16 metres off Match Seven.
