Claridge tells Paulton Rovers' young guns to take chance
Former Bristol Rovers striker Rob Claridge is urging Paulton's promising young starlets to use tomorrow's televised FA Cup clash with Norwich City to make a name for themselves.
Claridge lines up for Paulton in the clash, live on ITV1 (12.45pm), which he describes as the biggest match of his career.
But it is also a big match for some of the club's teenage starlets looking to follow in the footsteps of former Paulton star Ashley Barnes, who is now with Championship club Plymouth Argyle.
Claridge said: "It is a big day for everyone at the club, but a real chance for some of our younger players to make a name for themselves.
"We have some very promising young players here like our goalkeeper Kyle Phillips, who is a young lad of only 20 but has massive amounts of ability. I have played with a lot of goalkeepers and I think he is up there with the best of them in terms of all-round ability.
"I've told him this game is a fantastic shop window for him and for the likes of Ben Lacey.
"Ben is a raw 18-year-old with bags of potential. He has no fear and is like a little Wayne Rooney; he's as strong as an ox and lightning quick.
"Playing against a league club live on ITV is the best possible shop window they could have. If they prove themselves and have a good game I have no doubt that there will be numerous clubs coming to have a look."
Numerous scouts have already been alerted to the potential shown by the likes of Lacey and Phillips, with League One club Millwall among those who have sent spies to Winterfield Road.
Lacey, 18, has been described as 'my next Ashley Barnes' by Paulton boss Andrew Jones – but so far the right-sided midfielder is trying to forget about any attention.
"It's the biggest day of my career by far," said Lacey. "I've heard there have been a few scouts looking at me, but I try not to let it affect me.
"I just try and do as well as I can in every game, regardless of whether someone is watching me or not.
"I'm desperate to carve out a full-time career in football and I just have to keep my head down, work hard and see what happens."
If Rovers win, each home fan will be able to claim a free pint of Blackthorn cider, after the company became the club's temporary sponsors.
