Carling Cup half-time: Crewe Alexandra 1 Bristol City 0:

Bristol City's Nicky Maynard and Dele Adebola received a hearty reception at their old stomping ground of Crewe but were upstaged by the home side's Anthony Elding who gave the hosts a first-half lead.

Elding proved there is life after Maynard at the Alexandra Stadium with his third goal of the season midway through the half.

The Robins have not made it to the third round of the Carling Cup for five years and City boss Gary Johnson made a clear statement of intent to rectify this fact.

He named an unchanged line-up from the emphatic 3-0 win against Coventry at the Ricoh Arena on Saturday with the exception of restoring Chris Weale between the posts as promised after dropping him at the weekend.

Adebola had an early chance to give City the lead but hit his shot straight at Crewe keeper Steve Collis after being put clean through by Lee Johnson.

The Robins were immediately on the back foot though and captain Louis Carey was required to put his newly-stitched head back in where it hurts.

City's bad luck with injuries continued though. Jamie McAllister was carried off on a stretcher shortly before Elding's strike. Fellow Scottish international Andy Webster replaced him with Liam Fontaine switching to left back.

City went one down against Peterborough in the first round and suffered the same at the Alexandra Stadium. Elding finished with aplomb with a curling right foot shot past Weale after a fine interchange with fellow front-man Tom Pope. And he could have added another before the break.

Michael McIndoe and Johnson both peppered the Crewe end with long-range shots but, bar Adebola's early chance, Collis was not properly tested.

City (4-4-2): Weale, Orr, Fontaine, Carey, McAllister (Webster 19), B Wilson, Skuse, Johnson, McIndoe, Adebola, Maynard. Subs not used: Basso, Noble, Brooker, Sproule, Williams, Trundle.

Crewe (4-4-2): Collis, Woodards, O'Donnell, Baudet, Bailey, Moore, O'Connor, Rix, Grant, Pope, Elding. Subs not used: Legzdins, Schumacher, Carrington, Miller, Donaldson, McManus, Westwood.
