Bristol City Council will hold an internal investigation into the death of a teenage boy near The Park Centre in Knowle West.

As reported by the Bristol Evening Post yesterday, the 16-year-old died on Wednesday from a serious head injury after what is believed to have been a fall near the council-run centre, in Daventry Road.

The teenager's name has not yet been released. Last night the police said they were aware of the incident and will be jointly investigating with the health service.

They confirmed it was not being treated as suspicious, and that Avon Coroner's Office had been notified.

The health and safety executive said it was also aware of the incident, but had not been asked to investigate.

The teenager attended The Park's pupil referral unit, run by the council's education department, and helps youngsters who have problems at mainstream schools.

The accident is thought to have happened at lunchtime outside the centre's gates, on the site of the former Merrywood School.

An ambulance spokeswoman said the teenager was in cardiac arrest when paramedics arrived. Emergency treatment was carried out at the scene, but he was later pronounced dead at the Bristol Royal Infirmary.

Yesterday The Park was open as normal, and staff and pupils were offered support.
