City of Bristol College hairdressing students triumph in regional contest

HAIRDRESSING and media make-up students from City of Bristol College have triumphed at a regional competition by bringing home eight first place wins, three second place awards, five third places and one fourth place prize.

The Association of Hairdressers and Therapists (AHT) UK Trainee Competition finals took place in Blackpool, where students competed for prizes in several categories.

Students from England, Scotland and Wales secured their places in the regional competitions and will now begin their training for the national competitions taking place later this year in Blackpool.

NVQ Level 3 hairdressing student Lucy Knight, from Whitchurch, added to her already impressive wins at previous competitions. She won the AHT ladies’ evening style, as well as second place in cut and blow dry and third place awards in the Level 3 skills challenge.

Lucy said: “It was such an amazing experience. The atmosphere was so exciting. I’m really looking forward to going onto the nationals.”

Other winners included Lauren Willingha, who came first in the African Hair competition and Helen Eyre, who took first place in face and body painting. Alex Whitman also won a first place award in 1960s hair.

Jackie Mazzie, head of service and leisure at City of Bristol College, said: “By competing in regional competitions, our students gain some very valuable experience that they can continue to draw upon when they enter the world of work.

“Our students have done brilliantly and their latest collection of awards shows just how hard they have been working.”
