A cigarette left in a plastic lid on the arm of a sofa started a fire in a flat in Wootton Road, in St Anne's.

Fire crews were alerted by someone who heard the smoke alarm.

The man who lived there was asleep and woke up as the crews arrived at about 7.45pm on Friday. Avon Fire and Rescue said he was unaffected by smoke as the bedroom door was shut.
