The British Motocross Championships starts on Sunday at Canada Heights, near Swanley, Kent – and there will be a new winner.

Scot Billy Mackenzie is not defending his open-class title so there will be a new name on the trophy – possibly Marshfield's Tom Church.

Now a member of the CCM squad, he has had some impressive season results and will be striving to get a useful tally of points at the Kent circuit and at the Langrish circuit, near Petersfield, in a couple of weeks time before the World Series starts in Italy at the end of the month.

Several others will be eyeing the vacant title including experienced Carl Nunn, Brad Anderson, Gordon Crockard, Kristian Whatley and Elliott Banks-Browne.

The 250cc series looks like being a repetition of the 2008 series with the main contenders being current holder Shaun Simpson and Stephen Sword but Lewis Gregory and Jason Dougan could upset the form book.

The Off-Road Promoters season also kicks off on Sunday with the Teignbridge club's meeting at Littlehempston, near Totnes.

Tomorrow: Pendennis MCC Clubman's Enduro, Radnor Downs, Scorrier near Redruth, Cornwall (11am). Somerton MCC trial, Binegar Bottom Quarry, Gurney Slade near Shepton Mallet (2pm).

Sunday: Sidcup MCC British Motocross Championships 1st rd, Canada Heights, Button Street, Swanley, Kent (12 noon). West of England MCC Sammy Miller series trial, Ripon Tor Firing Range, near Ashburton, (10am). Tiverton MCC South West Centre championship trial, Marwoods Farm, Cove near Tiverton (10am). North Somerset MSC timed and observation trial, Malthouse Farm, Chelwood, near Bath, (10.30am). Teignbridge MCC ORPA motocross, Fishacre Barton, Littlehempston, near Totnes, (10.30am).
