As Christmas approaches, a fundraising event is due to be held to remind people of the reality of life in modern day Bethlehem.

Bethlehem in 2008 is far removed from the familiar Christmas card image of mangers and baby Jesus.

As a way of raising awareness of the poverty and hardship faced in today's Bethlehem, Christian Aid is organising 'From Bethlehem to Bristol', an evening of information and entertainment. It is due to take place on Tuesday, December 2 between 7.30pm and 10pm at Bristol Council House, College Green.

All funds raised will support the work of Christian Aid partner organisations in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Nader Abu Amsha, director of the YMCA based in Shepherd's Field in Bethlehem, will be the keynote speaker and will be joined by a representative from Islamic Relief and Bristol-based Jewish author Lisa Saffron.

They will be talking about their work in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories and their involvement on securing peace and justice for all.

'A Bethlehem Suite', comprising music from various Middle Eastern traditions, visuals and stories, will also be performed.

This will draw on the experiences of Bristol-based pilgrim and peace volunteer David Mowat.

Ruth Davey, Christian Aid representative for Bristol, said: "In the run up to Christmas and the season of goodwill, we want to raise awareness of the fact that all should have access to land, health and education."

Tickets cost £5 and can be bought on the door.
