I HAVE a new respect for racing drivers in Formula One. They must be among the fittest athletes on earth, or I'm doing all the wrong things? They finish a race, wipe their faces with a towel and then head straight for the press conference. Just watch when they pitch up in India for the Grand Prix this Sunday. I could barely get my hands on the steering wheel after a track day at Bedford autodrome last week. Mind you, they had to take the seat out and half the side pod to get me in the single seater. Now I know why there are no 6ft 5ins racing drivers. After a couple of laps, I was sliding further and further into the monocoque. As you might imagine, a race suit that started off too small felt none too comfortable after that. Talk about a wedgie! It's a funny period for me, a four-week hiatus before picking up the thread in Singapore in a fortnight for the final run into Dubai. I'll be playing in the same three closing tournaments as Rory McIlroy (pictured), who was in my age group as an amateur. There are rumours that Rory is about to become the new face of Nike golf with a deal worth £250 million over ten years. Don't worry folks, it's not like that for the rest of us. I'll just have to go out and win a couple of majors I suppose! Easy peasy. It's great to see Rory doing so well and it makes you think what we have to do match him. Sink more putts is probably the answer. Rory drains an awful lot more than he used to do between eight and 12 feet. They are the ones Tiger used to put away without blinking. When they go in it and you get on a roll the game seems an awful lot easier. Every now and again it happens. Rory seems to have cracked the code of doing it most weeks. Good luck to him. Rory was one of the top amateurs in the country. He and Lloyd Saltman were the standout players in our generation. Lloyd is in the Challenge tour at the moment. No shame in that. Though Rory used to rip it as a kid, there was no sense that he was that much better than the other elite amateur lads. Good luck to him. It is up to the rest of us to work out how he does it and get on with it. There are no easy answers. A lot of it is to do with confidence. All professional golfers can hit a ball. If you walk down the range at any event and knew nothing about golf, you would struggle to pick the superstars from the also-rans. I have just been down to Mizuno headquarters in Surrey to sort out my new irons, so I'm ready to go. Another couple of weeks of practice and I'll be ready for Rory!
