Chipping Sodbury wins People's Millions ITV cash
A LAND drainage scheme in Chipping Sodbury will receive a £40,000 lottery boost as the last winner in the People's Millions TV contest.
Members of the public voted for the scheme ahead of another local initiative, the Meadow Vale Community Association's Operation Pool Table, in Speedwell.
The Chipping Sodbury Town Trust's plan will see the quality of the field at The Ridings Sports Association improved so the community can use it all year round.
The large field is currently under- used because it becomes waterlogged in wet weather.
The project will ensure the facilities – particularly the practice area used by rugby and football clubs – can be brought up to scratch.
Trust chairman David Shipp said winning the money was "absolutely wonderful".
He said: "That will go a long way to getting rid of that mud patch out there.
"I would just like to thank all those people who phoned up to support us.
"We are going to drain an area of land to put it more into community use and make it easier for people to play football and rugby."
Each night this week two projects went head to head on ITV West to secure the most public votes and win a Big Lottery Fund award.
Throughout the competition the Fund has given £255,367 in grants to five community organisations, with tens of thousands of votes cast.
The Bristol area did well, snapping up three of the top prizes.
As well as the Chipping Sodbury and Kingswood Scouts projects, on Monday night an early years centre in St Jude's won nearly £50,000 to build a sensory garden for children.
Rosemary Early Years Centre received £49,623 that will be spent on converting a piece of land next to the nursery school into Rosemary's Garden, with sensory learning and play equipment and a community allotment.
The project will be used for a number of activities, such as story-telling, cookery sessions using produce grown in the garden, and arts and cultural events.
Mark Cotton, Big Lottery Fund head of region for the South West, said: "There have been some fantastic projects competing throughout the week and voters have had some tough decisions to make.
"Our research shows that the People's Millions contest is successful in promoting community spirit in the region, win or lose, so congratulations to all the winners and thanks to all the competing finalists for taking part."
