Artists and pupils pooled their efforts to create a colourful mural for a Yate school's climbing wall - and then they had to paint it again.

The children at the 100-pupil North Road Community Primary came up with ideas of what should be featured so members of a painting group could include them in their scene.

But they had not bargained on being supplied with the wrong kind of paint for the project and it meant their first efforts were washed away as soon as it rained.

Now the amateur artists who attend the Palettes for Pleasure sessions in the Ridgewood Community Centre have re-painted the mural - this time using waterproof paint.

Shirley Britton, who runs the group, said: "We turned up to admire what we'd done but all that was left was a colourful puddle. All we could do was laugh about it and start all over again. The project has been a hoot from the start and we've really enjoyed it."

Shirley, 58, and the other artists who meet on Mondays at the centre in Station Road, were asked to brighten up a wall that has had steps added so pupils can practice climbing.

Shirley said the children's imagination ran riot and resulted in a scene that included wild animals, hot air balloons, tropical fish, Concorde and even the Clifton Suspension Bridge.

She said: "We've ended up with the Suspension Bridge in the middle of the Swiss Alps. The children asked for mountains and snow, a lake with a boat on it, a parrot, tiger, bear and dolphins."

The school's friends group paid for the materials, with the children helping to paint the background. The artists did the rest of the work, with the children adding finishing touches.
