Cheltenham can turn the corner says loan star Westwood
On-loan defender Chris Westwood looks set to depart Cheltenham Town's battle for survival – but insists the players he leaves behind have shown that they are good enough to turn their season around.
Westwood looks cetain to return to parent club Peterborough after Cheltenham take on MK Dons at Whaddon Road tomorrow, following Martin Allen's admission that finances make an extension to his month-long stay "unlikely."
The central defender has seen the side pick up one point in his three appearances so far and has been involved as Cheltenham surrendered leads in the dying stages of two of those games.
That has left the Robins five points shy of safety, but Westwood believes it is only a matter of time before their fortunes change.
He said: "We have had our noses in front in a couple of games and conceded at the death to drop points both times.
"It has been disappointing, but there are lot of positives.
"We have to start learning to turn those leads into actual wins and we will be fine.
"It is positive that we are able to get goals and go ahead in games and now we have to work a bit harder to hold on to those leads.
"Everyone knows the situation we are in and we are doing our best to get out of it.
"I am sure it will turn itself around if the lads keep playing like they have been."
Westwood has contributed two goals in his three game spell, but is hoping to sign off with a first clean sheet to help his temporary team-mates to an important victory against the promotion-chasing Dons.
"I scored six in one season for Hartlepool," Westwood said. "I have not scored for Peterborough but I prefer to keep clean sheets.
"MK Dons are up at the top and they will be looking to punish the clubs are the bottom.
"We have to make sure we do our jobs and try to get results out of them. "All the games are big as long as we are in the position we are in."
Allen, meanwhile, is hoping that his side's luck will change quickly after being on the end of some questionable refereeing decision in recent weeks.
"Over a longer period of time you make your own luck, but there have been a few things that have gone against us of late," he said.
"I am hoping the one or two things that are going against us just now will level out over the rest of the season.
"If we start worrying about it or keep highlighting those things, then we have a problem.
"We are in charge of our own destiny and we have to take responsibility.
"Our focus has to be on our own performance and what we can do to change it.
"We have to look at ourselves and see where we can learn and improve."
