Former Cheltenham striker could come back to haunt them
The man whose goal took Cheltenham Town into Coca-Cola League One will be trying to help condemn his former club to the drop at Whaddon Road on Saturday.
Steve Guinan's speculative cross-shot evaded everyone and curled into the bottom left corner of the Grimsby Town net to earn the Robins a League One play-off final victory at Cardiff's Millennium Stadium in May 2006.
The 33-year-old striker had joined Cheltenham from Hereford United in 2004, but is now in his second spell with the Bulls, who he helped win promotion last season.
Guinan says that in an ideal world both his current and former clubs would avoid the drop, but he admits that is highly unlikely.
"I still have a lot of friends at Cheltenham and I have no axe to grind with the club," he said. "Ideally both clubs would be in League One next season, but realistically it's not going to happen."
With Hereford and bottom club Cheltenham locked together on 21 points, a win for either club would put the losers in an even bleaker situation.
But Guinan says neither club's fate will be decided as he returns to Whaddon Road for the first time tomorrow.
"I think it's going to be a tight one and could go right down to the end of the season," he said.
"This is a big game, but I wouldn't say the team that loses is down."
Guinan scored 18 goals in 95 starts and 16 substitute appearances for Cheltenham.
After scoring the all-important goal to take Cheltenham up, he failed to score a single League One goal during the whole of the 2006-07 season.
He was loaned to Hereford in January and freed by the then Robins boss John Ward in the summer, when he rejoined the Bulls permanently, where he has enjoyed more success in front of goal.
Guinan netted a first half hat-trick in a remarkable 5-0 win over promotion-chasing Oldham Athletic on January 17, but Hereford have lost two and drawn one of their three matches since then.
"This season has gone well for me personally, but I don't want to go down and I want to score more winning goals," Guinan said.
Cheltenham boss Martin Allen has a fully fit squad from which to choose. Damian Spencer is set to start up front following his hat-trick against MK Dons a fortnight ago.
Drissa Diallo is also poised for a start having recovered from a medial knee ligament injury.
