Goalkeeper Scott Brown will be out to impress one of his childhood heroes when Cheltenham Town visit Leicester City tomorrow.

The runaway League One leaders' goalkeeping coach is Mike Stowell, who was Wolverhampton Wanderers' number one when a young Brown was a regular among the home hordes at Molineux.

Stowell then coached Brown in Wolves' academy, becoming a mentor as well as an idol for the budding custodian.

Stowell left Wolves to join Bristol City the year Brown turned full-time at the West Midlands club, but the two were reunited at Ashton Gate during the 2004-05 campaign, before Brown joined Cheltenham in the summer of 2005.

"I have always looked up to him (Stowell) and when I was released from Wolves, he invited me down to train at Bristol City after I'd been at Welshpool for a few months and luckily enough they took me on until the end of the season," Brown said.

"He took me into his family home and looked after me, showing me when it was right to do extra training and when it was right to put my feet up, so I learned a lot from him and I still speak to him a lot now."

Stowell, 43, took over joint managerial responsibility at Leicester, following Martin Allen's sacking in August 2007.

He had been re-hired by Allen after losing his job as assistant to previous boss Rob Kelly three months earlier.

With Leicester 12 points clear at the summit and Cheltenham eight adrift at the bottom, Brown is likely to be a busy man at the Walkers Stadium.

But the 23-year-old, who is thought to be attracting the attention of Premier League club Portsmouth, will relish the chance to show Stowell how far he has progressed.

"I want to win the game and I am sure Stowelly wants Leicester to win, but it would be nice to show him what he has taught me and hopefully keep a clean sheet and get something," Brown said.

"Everyone we play expects to beat us and we are always the underdogs, but nobody is going to give up."

Brown, who has another year to run on his contract after this season, has been lifted by the news that his current coach Alan Fettis is back twice a week after losing his full-time job as goalkeeping coach and chief scout last week.

"He is great to work with and great to have around the place so I am delighted he is back," Brown said.
