Cheddar must stay a village
Do we really need any more housing schemes in Cheddar? This time it is for a small picturesque field off Sharpham Road, alongside the old strawberry railway line which is now a cycle track, where there is an abundance of wildlife such as badgers, foxes, glow-worms, newts and wild birds.
We are told this will be affordable or social housing for Cheddar residents only. Have we got enough youngsters in our village waiting for all the proposed houses in Cheddar?
In our experience, our three children did not want to live on top of mum and dad but have moved within 12 miles of us, not because they had to, but because they wanted to.
We had been led to believe by some members of the parish council that this would be opposed by some of them and unlikely to happen, however, a few weeks later the letter arrived and was agreed by both Cheddar Parish Council and Sedgemoor District Council, telling us of the above intentions. Who do you believe?
Can our village really take this influx of more families? Already, schools, doctors and dentist are stretched to the limit. Also, the extra traffic on our already busy roads is going to cause even more congestion, especially around school time.
Cheddar will become one big housing estate as our green areas disappear and we will never get them back, many on green belt land that the normal person would never get permission to build on.
Do we really want to live in a small town and not a village any more?
