Channon hoping for Dubai success at Lingfield
Mick Channon endured further heartbreak with the luckless Youmzain in Dubai on Saturday but can gain small consolation with the aptly-named Fantastic Dubai in the John Ebdon Memorial Handicap at Lingfield.
Fifth in a decent Newbury maiden on his only start last season, he won at Lingfield a few weeks ago.
Fantastic Dubai was sent off odds-on that day and is apparently very highly thought of.
While he only scrambled home by a short head, Channon's charge was value for more as he was certainly not doing much in front.
The Storm Cat colt holds entries in the Classics so it will be a let-down if he cannot take advantage off a mark of 67.
Secret Society carries a very tall home reputation and can win the Spring Family Fun Day This Saturday Maiden Stakes.
Michael Bell's youngster was sent off odds-on for his debut at Yarmouth last May.
But after missing the break, he was always playing catch-up and was looked after by Jamie Spencer.
Secret Society put up a much better effort on his next start at Folkestone though, when second only to Galpin Junior, pulling six lengths clear of the third.
Galpin Junior is thought of so highly by Brian Meehan that he subsequently ran in the Middle Park and the Dewhurst – not beaten far in either race.
With a winter on his back, Secret Society should know more about the game and can open his account.
William Haggas enjoyed a great season last term and appears to have a filly of some potential running at Kempton in Respite.
The likes of Conquest, Collection, King's Apostle and Aqlaam formed part of Haggas' best-ever total last summer.
Lester Piggott's son-in-law will be hoping to begin where he left off this time around.
Respite may be starting off at a lowly level in the digibet Maiden Fillies Stakes, but Haggas will quite rightly have high hopes for her for the rest of the season if all goes to plan.
She chased home Luca Cumani's Fantasia, a subsequent second to Rainbow View in the Fillies' Mile at Ascot, on her only start as a juvenile.
The third home from that Newmarket maiden went on to win a race and while the rest were much of a muchness, Respite's breeding suggests she will improve over time.
By Pivotal and out of a Nashwan mare, the Cheveley Park Stud-owned three-year-old could have a bright future.
Catterick stage their first Flat meeting of the year and Richard Fahey, who has started the season amongst the winners, can score with Mighty Moon in the Ted Thompson 80th Birthday Handicap.
A winner over hurdles on heavy ground at Newcastle in January, he also has winning form on fast ground at York last summer.
An ability to act on fast is also essential at Exeter, where the races over fences have had to be abandoned due to hard ground.
David Pipe's Quaddick Lake won on firm ground at Taunton recently and hopefully that will have boosted his confidence ahead of the Burts Chips Handicap Hurdle at Exeter.
He might just be one to rattle up a sequence at this time of year.
