Scott Chalmers rode away from the field to win round four of the Western Cyclo-Cross League after leading from the start.

Last year's league champion was shadowed by Simon Burgess (Somer Valley CC) on the first lap at Gloucester Boating Lake, but upped the pace on the second lap to pull clear.

The Science In Sport.com rider finished more than a minute ahead of Burgess.

Jeremy Addis (Royal Dean Forest CC) crossed the line just five seconds further back after his main challenger for third place, Chas Thursfield (Dream CC), fell and damaged his bike on the third lap as it began to rain.

Thursfield lost three minutes as he was forced to get a replacement bike, but then battled on to finish in eighth place in Sunday's event, staged by Team Striking Bikes in Gloucester after the cancellation of the planned race at Weston-super-Mare.

Round five is being staged by Dream CC at Ashton Court in Bristol from 10.30am on Sunday.

Round four result: 1 Scott Chalmers (Science In Sport.com); 2 Simon Burgess (Somer Valley CC); 3 Jeremy Addis (Royal Dean Forest CC); 4 Nic Burrage (Cheltenham and County); 5 Steve Proud (U/A); 6 Jamie Pembroke (U/A); 7 Andy Webb (Kenilworth Wheelers); 8 Chas Thursfield (Dream CC); 9 Martin Wright (Dream CC); 10 Paul O'Driscoll (Swindon RC). Under-12 winner: Ashley Hutchison (VC St Raphael). Under-10 winner: Lance Hutchison (VC St Raphael).
