BRISTOL Civic Society is joining other societies across the country in a Civic Day to celebrate what makes the city attractive, enjoyable and distinctive.

In Bristol the focus will be on celebrating the wealth of public spaces and the civic society is marking the day by encouraging everyone to spend some time outside enjoying their local area.

In collaboration with the Bear Pit Improvement Group the main event will take place on Saturday, June 25, at the St James Barton roundabout, which is known locally as the Bear Pit.

Stalls and entertainment will be held in the Bear Pit from noon until 4pm.

In the run up to Civic Day a programme of activity is planned.

People are encouraged to take part – this could include sharing a photograph of a favourite public space or sending a tweet which includes the #brisday hashtag to participating in everything on offer and discovering more about where you live.

The idea for Civic Day is an initiative of Civic Voice, the national charity for the civic movement in England.

Its president Griff Rhys Jones said: "If we are going to ensure that our villages, towns and cities give everybody living in them a good quality of life, we need everyone to get involved."

Stephen Wickham, chair of Bristol Civic Society, said: "We hope as many people as possible will take the opportunity to do something while respecting the environment and other people around them.

"This is a departure from our normal campaigning activities but a great way for us to connect with people in Bristol and understand what's important to them.

"As a group made up of volunteers we always welcome new members."

Bristol Civic Society will have a stand in the Bear Pit and welcome ideas on what should be protected or improved in Bristol.
