Striker Andy Williams scored his first goal for Hereford since returning to Edgar Street to clinch the Bulls' first win in eight games.

Williams, who is on loan from Bristol Rovers until January, lashed the ball into the roof of the net on the hour.

His winner also lifted Hereford off the bottom of League One for the first time in several weeks.

Bulls chief Graham Turner fielded the same starting XI that gained their first away point of the season at Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday.

Carlisle took up the running from the start, with their top marksman Danny Graham having a close-range shot well saved by goalkeeper Darren Randolph at the expense of a corner.

Hereford hit back with Kris Taylor having a low shot cut out by Carlisle keeper Ben Alnwick.

Full-back Richard Jackson also had a long free-kick cleared away by Carlisle's former Bristol City central defender Richard Keogh.

Back came the Cumbrians, with Graham shooting wide of a Hereford upright from 20 yards in the 12th minute.

Alnwick had to be alert to race out of his goal and prevent Williams reaching Toumani Diagouraga's through ball, then Steve Guinan had a sharp cross on the turn hacked away by Keogh as Hereford pushed forward.

Carlisle hit back again with Danny Carlton drilling a shot straight at Randolph from the edge of the penalty area.

Campion however had a clear cut opening to put the visitors in front in the 25th minute but blasted the ball wide of Hereford's far post.

After the break both sides had chances but it was the Bulls who made theirs count.

Hereford eventually took the lead in the 60th minute when Williams lashed the ball into the top corner of the net from 18 yards.

Carlisle central defender Richard Keogh was then sent off in the 77th minute for elbowing Guinan in the face.

Williams could have doubled the lead before the final whistle but shot wide.
