Careers fair to help people into work
Bristol and South Gloucestershire residents who are battling to find their next job are being offered help at a careers fair being held next week.
Merlin Housing Society is working with a host of local organisations to arrange the fair at The Edge Church, Aztec West, Bristol, on Tuesday May 15 from 12noon – 7pm. The day will include a wide range of opportunities including information on apprenticeships, CV writing, and volunteering. There'll also be the chance for people to chat with employers and recruiters to find out what vacancies they currently have.
Community Investment Manager Jen Griffiths said: "We're committed to improving our communities and the lives of the people who live in them and helping people back into employment is an important part of this. Times are tough and we wanted to give people a chance to learn new skills or find out what options are out there.
"This is a great chance for people of all ages to come and have a look at what is on offer locally. By learning how to improve their interview technique, picking up new skills from a demonstration or by finding out what opportunities are out there, this event could make a real difference to anyone who is looking for work."

“@Tody
quite right "not for profit" by a.s.s
Yet again here we have a case of filton councillors on a council (south glos) dropping the ball on local issues...Merlin run the show for south glos council and they let them!
what do we have councillors for, they dot carry any weight (except whats round their belly).”

“this 'not for profit' business is a bit of a smokescreen really.

“We would just like to point out that we've carried out thorough consultation with the residents at Newleaze House. Understandably residents are upset about losing their homes, but feedback suggests many understand the reasoning behind the decision. This is a comment we received from a resident:
"Although I hate to say it, Merlin has made the right decision. It was expected and was not a shock to me personally, after being here over 10 years. Your recommendation stated all that is wrong about Newleaze House so there really isn't anything Merlin can do to make it elderly friendly. Sad, but now hopefully we can all move forward. The team did a good job and kept us informed all the way."
FrreeFilton, we are always happy to answer any questions from the public, but feel you would get a much better understanding about these issues if you came to talk to us personally.”

“@ FreeFilton I know a lot of people who have a house from Merlin at a much more discounted rate than what private rental is. From what I have been told Merlin have done a great job, after all private landlords would not replace windows and doors after 10-15 years, fit new kitchen / bathrooms every 10-15 years. be on hand 24/7 for any issues. . .
I guess if you are not happy with Merlin as a landlord then you could always pay a few hundred pound extra a month a rent from a private landlord. Trouble is with that you have no security at all.
But this is the issue that more and more people are finding as there are not enough social housing around.”

“Afraid thats the easy option to take it offline, people deserve to see answers publcily surely? As you took the time to do some PR for Merlin housing its only fair that the open questions asked of your organisation should be answered here?
People are disappointed with Merlin and the way in which South Glos council have handed over control to a commercial organisation.”

“FreeFilton, we are happy to provide responses to your questions, but perhaps calling, or coming to see us, would be a better forum to discuss your concerns? You can call us on 01454 81100, or visit us at Chipping Sodbury. Many thanks.”

“Thanks you for the response Merlin housing. Your response raises some serious issues however.
If what you say is true and Newleaze house is unsuitable for elderly housing why have you allowed them to remain there so many years? Not all the accommadation is unsuitable.
Why replace it with student housing? If not suitable for the elderly why should is be so for students?
What of the surrounding residents and what they want? Students can cause all sorts of issues locally so is it right to assume to replace with them?
Why not invest in the site and rebuild on the site for the elderly?
Residents are concerned and are happy there, they havent complained about the conditions and they are NOT guaranteed re-homing in Filton. Why not?
Do residents want more student housing in Filton? The elderly community are being forced out and this cannot be right.”

“Jonnyfandango - thanks for your feedback. If we decide to run a similiar event, we'll take a more central location into consideration.”
