Canoeist dies in tragedy at weir
A CANOEIST in his 30s has died after his kayak capsized on the river Frome at Frenchay.
Avon and Somerset Police officers were called to the riverbank at The Weir at Snuff Mills at about 10.30pm on Wednesday after reports that the man was in difficulty.

A Great Western Ambulance Service paramedic rapid-responder raced to the scene, supported by an ambulance crew.
Firefighters also attended to help with a search for the man, who had been canoeing with five or six others.

He was rescued from the water and given emergency resuscitation at the scene before being taken to Frenchay Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The accident has been referred to the coroner, who will hold an inquest.
A second canoeist was also taken to hospital, suffering from exhaustion.

“horrible to see this news story, especially as a knowlegdgeable kayaker friend of mine who lives beside the river further upstream had seen them (I assume) getting into their boats and had been telling them not to procede as it was too dangerous only earlier that evening. And he later announced that he was really worried as the helicopter was flying around and hovering over the river, and he thought the worst may have happened.”
