MORE than £1 million worth of cannabis has been found being grown in an industrial unit in St Anne's.

Avon and Somerset police raided the unit on Newbridge Trading estate yesterday, seizing more than 2,800 immature plants.

Experts said the crop had a street value of about £1.5 million.

The raid was carried out under Operation Viscount, a campaign across the force area targeting the production of cannabis.

The force's drugs strategy manager Paul Bunt said: "This was a very sophisticated set-up and a highly-organised production site.

"Today's seizures will have a direct impact on the supply of cannabis in Bristol.

"All of these plants will now be destroyed and will not reach some of the most vulnerable members of our society. We will now seek to place those responsible for their cultivation before the courts.

"Cannabis is seen by some as a lower level drug but we take it very seriously.

"The cannabis trade itself is illegal but it can also bring other crime to an area if a factory is located there. I would ask the community to continue to support our work."

On Tuesday, three Polish men were arrested after 31kg of cannabis was found in a lorry in Yate.

The articulated vehicle was found at about 10.30pm on Stover Industrial Estate, Millbrook Road. A total of 52 bags of drugs were recovered, each containing around 600g of cannabis.

To report suspected drug dealing or production, call police on 101.

“For one I'm dyslexic, not using that as an excuse. And to be honest my spelling is totally irrelevant to the topic of growing, and smoking cannabis. As I don't smoke weed I'm just not judge mental towards others life choices you waste your life on news websites complaining about them, they have a smoke"mong out" and relax not caring about what you people think. So I think your argument, comment was worthless and *****y. Good day. (gromgeordie)”

“I think Marcus1223 shows by his illiteracy ( either lack of education caused by being too monged on skunk to attend school, or actual brain damage caused by smoking cannabis) that the arguments which state that cannabis use is harmless are clearly mistaken.”

“So if GW pharma in Kent grow cannabis, its safe effective medicine. But when some one else grows the exact same plant, its a dangerous drug that causes psychosis...what the F..

The abundance of lies is outrageous! If you think its illegal because its harmful then you live in La La Land. Its all money and politics, nothing to do with science and evidence or our health!!

The law needs changing, as this prohibition experiment has failed hard. More and more people continue to grow/sell/smoke it. So dont you think its time for a change?

“Agree with the previous two comments. I also read in the Metro today that 14% of A&E injury and illnesses are alcohol related. I'd like to see the figures for cannabis.

"Today's seizures will have a direct impact on the supply of cannabis in Bristol."

I would also be very, very surprised if Mr Bunt actually believes that statement. I can't remember the last time there was a 'drought' as it was years ago.”

“I find stoners to be incredibly tiresome, behaving as if their smelly habit offers some kind of counter-culture credibility. I've never understood why they all have to smell so bad, wafting their foul patchouli and ylang ylang reek wherever they go. Wretched individuals.

Well done to the police for making such a successful raid. Here's hoping they make many more!”

    “@jceegas

    Quite right.

Cannabis was only made illegal due to lobbying by industry in the USA in the 1930's. They were worried that hemp would kill their profits in the filed of paper, oil, rope etc. The descendants of these leaders of industry are continuing to screw the people today to line their own pockets.

At least in the USA now some states are starting to see the benefits of cannabis as a medicine and are relaxing the archaic laws.

The war on cannabis is the most ridiculous waste of our money ever conceived.”

    “Mr Bunt

I saw your Operation Viscount van on its way to St Annes yesterday, with "relentless on cannabis cultivation" emblazoned across the back.

How about being "relentless" against crime that actually matters? People have been using cannabis for thousands of years, and your little operation will make no difference.

After a hard days work relentlessly pursuing cannabis, some of your officers probably get home and have a nice cup of tea and a spliff to relax.

After a hard days work relentlessly building a prosecution case against growers some lawyers will get home and have a nice cup of tea and a spliff to relax.

After a hard days work relentlessly sentencing growers some magistrates will get home and have a nice cup of tea and a spliff to relax.

If you would like a really big bust, then why not relentlessly raid the huge cannabis factory in the home counties, funded by the government?

Please don't insult us by claiming to be providing an important public service, when you are just pouring our hard earned tax down the drain. Relentlessly.”
